Childhood Memories
A lot of people will tell you that they have super early childhood memories. I can't say that I have a lot of those, and some of the ones I have... I'm not sure if I recall the memory because of a story or a picture, or if I'm actually remembering what happened that day. Memory is a funny thing, isn't it?
The Care Bears were quite a big thing when I was a little girl, and I remember looking out my window, hoping they would come down from the clouds and play with me. I had a huge imagination back then, and although my wish never came true, it didn't stop me from dreaming really big dreams!
Inspector Gadget was another one of my favorite cartoons when I was little. I was so enamored by all of the tech devices on the show, especially Penny's computer book. I never could've imagined that we would have something like that in the form of a laptop computer or even the concept of a smartphone that you would take everywhere with you. Yet here we are...
Gettysburg National Park was a place we frequented as kids. My parents are still huge Civil War buffs, and when we were growing up, we didn't have a ton of money. So a lot of the places we went were free, but also hugely educational. Gettysburg has a really great mix of everything. I remember climbing all over the rocks at Little Round Top, probably climbing on a few that I shouldn't have, and just having the best time. I remember the map that explained the "fishhook" defensive that turned out to be a really smart move when Pickett's ill-fated charge began. A lot has changed since the days that my sister and I used to visit. The Observation Tower came down and Devil's Den is closed off, but that won't stop me from taking my little Peanut to visit!
Summer Vacations meant trips to Indiana to see my grandparents. We'd spend the time visiting with my Mom's family, usually catching up on what had happened since the previous summer. One thing I remember to this day, and I can't tell you which particular trip it was, but we had the most amazing fish fry. All the boys went out on a fishing trip to catch the fish for the meal that evening. I begged to be allowed to go, and I was told that the trip was only for boys. No, I'm not over it. Definitely still a little bitter. But I stayed with all the other girls in my family and got everything else ready. When the guys got back, their fresh catches were immediately deboned, degutted, battered and fried up for dinner. And they were seriously delicious. Rainbow Trout if I remember correctly. It was a really good day.
Neapolitan Ice Cream Sandwiches were a treat that my Grandpa would make for us every time he came to visit. I can't remember the last time I saw the waffle sandwiches that you need to make them, but they were readily available way back when!
And while I'm thinking about frozen treats... anyone remember those Hershey twin pops in a ton of flavors? Sometimes my sister and I would share, sometimes we'd get our own. They were ten cents. Ten cents! We had a little corner store just up the street from our house, and along with the other kids from the neighborhood, we'd frequent them for all kinds of treats!
Summer wouldn't have been complete without epic water balloon battles. That same convenience store carried balloons that filled up nicely and only cost a penny! They were splattered with paint, so they looked really cool when you filled them up.
Remember the show Double Dare? I remember making the most elaborate obstacle courses in my backyard, trying to duplicate all of the stunts on the show. I don't think we ever got out condiments or anything to duplicate slime on the slides, or pools filled with shaving cream. But we had plastic wheelbarrows to jump over, hula hoops, jump ropes, all sorts of fun things involved. Lots of "MOM, watch this!" went on back in those days!
Oh, wow... I think I could go on and on with this. I had a lot of fun when I was a kid, but I also got in a lot of trouble. Constant trouble! There's definitely a lot that Sparklegirl won't be able to get away with, but when it really comes down to it, I turned out okay! So thanks, Mom and Dad... you did a great job!!!
